1. The Survival Handbook: Essential Skills for Outdoor Adventure The Survival Handbook: Essential Skills for Outdoor Adventure
from DK Publishing
Price: $16.00

Customer Review:
This was an impulse buy which I found at Costco. Mine is a soft cover but I am pretty sure it is identical otherwise.
The book is fun to read. Plenty of good information on outdoors survival, and the color illustrations are outstanding. Purely in terms of production value, I have not seen a... more info

from Ulysses Press
Price: $10.17

Customer Review:
This is one of three books I purchased in order to help prepare some younger Scouts to "Be Prepared" when they're camping and hiking. What I did not realized until the books arrived is that this book is written by the same author as the Special Forces Survival Guide; a book with approximately 500... more info

3. Outdoor Survival Guide Outdoor Survival Guide
from Human Kinetics
Price: $10.99

Customer Review:
This book is a must for emergency preparedness kits. Not only does it address the physical skills that will save you in a survival situation, but also speaks to the psychological survival skills which will determine if you will hold on long enough to use them. It is written in a voice that accompanies you as if you have your own seasoned, survival guide talking to you. It is very simple, unintimidating, and basic. It is an excellent reference for identifying plants, knowing what to do with available food, building shelters, following maps, using a compass, how to deal with a wild animal, how to deal with injury, etc. The illustrations are an excellent addition in teaching the steps for each skill. This is a must-have resource not only for adventurous outdoor types, but for anyone that lives in an area where a natural disaster could occur---floods, hurricanes, storms, earthquakes, etc. I'm giving one to everyone in my extended family for Christmas. more info

4. Everybody s Outdoor Survival Guide: The Green Beret Team Concept Inside Information Everybody's Outdoor Survival Guide: The Green Beret Team Concept Inside Information
from Frederick Fell
Price: $12.95

Customer Review:
This text is an introduction of sorts into the world of survivalism. While there are many "eat berries and wear loincloth" and "build a $50,000 bomb shelter and stock it with guns and food" types of survival books out there, few (any?) authors have done what Don Paul has- which is take the reader through every aspect of survival and help lay out a realistic plan for the average person to prepare themselves for whatever may come. The concepts layed out are realistic and flexible.
In this (his first?) book, Don Paul discusses the basics and touches on both short and long term survival situations and how best to deal with them. Each of his books have unique info in them, and put together, you have the blueprint of a complete survival plan. All of his books have continued to sell for about 20 years for several good reasons- word of mouth, valid info, and easy to read, and a bargain. It only cost me about $100 to get all of his books, and they render all of my expensive outdoorsman books obsolete.

5. Primitive Living, Self-Sufficiency, and Survival Skills Primitive Living, Self-Sufficiency, and Survival Skills
from Lyons Press
Price: $8.75

Customer Review:
This book is a good overview of primitive skills. I know how to make stone tools, (not well, but I at least know how it's done) and found the section on making stone tools extremely lacking to say the least. However, I learned a lot about subject I know nothing. If you know something about these... more info

6. How to Survive Anything, Anywhere: A Handbook of Survival Skills for Every Scenario and Environment How to Survive Anything, Anywhere: A Handbook of Survival Skills for Every Scenario and Environment
from International Marine/Ragged Mountain Press
Price: $10.48

Customer Review:
My favorite part of this book is how it covers many "man made" situations such as terrorism, crime and self defense. These aren't usually discussed in the context of individual survival skills. The comments on these subjects seem spot on. There are also the other typical woodland survival skills sections...such as fire starting, first aid, shelter etc. In these it might be on par with the classic woodland survival manual, The SAS Handbook. This combination makes this one of the most well rounded individual survival books I have seen. Like most non area specific guides the discussion of particular climates and situations are a bit general. However, this is inescapable in a general guide. The illustrations are very good and add to the information provided in the text. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in individual survival skills... more info
